Ivan is a 5 month old German Shepherd puppy. He is cute as can be, and very lovable. He is in a very playful, clumsy puppy phase of development. Ivan is curious about exploring everything around him, both by smelling and mouthing. He is friendly with people, and seemed friendly and playful with 2 other large German Shepherds he met. Ivan occasionally barks out of excitement, but is generally quiet. He does well in a pen or crate with minimal barking or whimpering. Ivan seems curious about cats, but backs off quickly with a good kitty-swat across the nose. At some point Ivan has had a broken right hip, which has healed enough for him to walk and run with a limp. He is unable to jump up into the car or onto taller objects, but he can walk up stairs without difficulty. Ivan is looking for a permanent home that will have the time and energy to provide him with love and training.
Ivan was examined by an orthopedic specialist at the end of August, 2017, as he has a condition where the femoral head of his right hind leg is missing, and his leg is held in place by his musculature. The good news is that Ivan’s condition is not painful and he walks around fine, so he should be allowed to grow and let his muscles continue to compensate for his faulty hip joint, and he does not need medication or medical intervention in the foreseeable future. Our specialist’s only cautionary advice is that Ivan should not be made to do extraordinary activities, like hiking, running for long distances or time, jumping up (e.g., playing Frisbee), agility training work, or other play or exercises that put significant stress on his leg which could cause it to become painful and unstable. The doctor advised Ivan be given glucosamine chondroitin and fish oil supplements as part of his regular meals to promote the healthy maintenance of his hip joint
